Kite Flying

Flying kites in open fields or across beaches is a simple and fun way to spend an afternoon. Either by yourself of as a group, kite flying offers a peacefulness that is playful and highly addictive.

The earliest known kites date back more than 2000 years. Though the exact origin is debated, it is believed the home of the first kite was Shandong, the eastern most province of China. One legend suggests a Chinese farmer tied a string to his hat to keep it from blowing away in strong winds, and from this concept the first kite was born. The first kites were constructed from common yet durable materials, such as bamboo for the framing covered by silk and paper.

Kites have been instrumental throughout the centuries, from the first discovery of electricity with Benjamin Franklin to the flying of airplanes with the Wright Brothers.  Today, it is a summer tradition and a favorite pastime with children.

As a summer activity, you can create your own kite to fly or find a unique kite to purchase. There are many to choose from with styles and sizes. You can set the day to pack a picnic with your favorite lunch and snacks. Then find a large open area to set your kite free and run. Just remember to do this on a breezy day.
